Thus, this public expression of ours is simply a humble and sincere act of recognition of the great works accomplished through the ministry of this meek Shepherd.

On October 22, 1991, Divine Providence called the then Metropolitan Bartholomew of Chalcedon to bear the heavy yet blessed cross of patriarchal ministry. Since then, for more than three decades, this humble yet steadfast Archpastor has borne witness to the power of evangelical love, the beauty of Orthodox Tradition, and the sanctity of ecclesiastical unity. Throughout his patriarchate, he has brought reconciliation to many schisms and divisions within the one catholic Church. His many years of archpastoral ministry have been marked by tireless labours to preserve the faith, to bring about reconciliation and overcome divisions, to foster mutual understanding among the Orthodox Churches, to uphold human dignity, and to care for nature and all of God’s creation — a concern for which he has become internationally known as the “Green Patriarch.”

And how heavy indeed is the cross of the Throne of Constantinople! To be the spiritual successor of the glorious Patriarchs of Constantinople, to preserve the living apostolic and patristic legacy of ancient Orthodox Romiosyne, and to do so in the very city where the splendour of the Christian Empire once shone forth, but where Orthodox Christians today constitute a small flock within a predominantly Muslim society — this is truly an ascetic struggle demanding exceptional faith, wisdom, patience, and spiritual courage. There, from where the Christianisation of many nations proceeded and where the dogmas of Christianity were established; there, where the centuries have left deep historical wounds, where serious challenges to the life and freedom of the Orthodox community persist even today, and where the renowned Theological School of Halki has awaited its students for decades, the Ecumenical Patriarch continues his ministry with dignity, meekness, and unwavering fidelity to the Church of God. At the same time, he strengthens and enhances the authority of this First-Throned Patriarchate throughout the world, in accordance with the blessed tradition of the Holy Fathers and the Councils. And for this very reason, his patriarchal dignity is not merely an honour, but above all a daily witness to the Cross and Resurrection, and a blessed responsibility towards the unity and fullness of the Orthodox Church.

In his person, the Church recognises a wise and experienced helmsman who, amidst the storms of the contemporary world, preserves unharmed the precious deposit of the apostolic faith, never ceasing to call humanity to peace, repentance, and brotherly love. For the true greatness of a Primate of the Church is revealed not merely in the dignity and privileges of his throne, but above all in his willingness to bear the burdens of others, to heal the wounds of division, and to be a father to all who long for unity in Christ. Indeed, he who stands in the first place, at whatever level of the ecclesial communion, stands on behalf of everyone and everything.

It is precisely this spirit of reconciliation, this noble perseverance in seeking the path of love and communion even where human calculations, often burdened and directed by the vanity of individuals, perceive nothing but an impasse, that constitutes one of the most remarkable characteristics of his historic ministry. Through all the complex trials of contemporary ecclesiastical life, His All-Holiness never ceases to remind us that the Church is not an arena for domination and rivalry, but the Body of Christ, in which the wound of one member becomes the pain of all, while the healing of a division becomes a shared joy. This is what we all desire and what the Eternal High Priest Himself prayerfully sought in His loving intercession before the Father: “That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You” (John 17:21). Such ministry, which is nothing other than a humble imitation and devoted following of Christ’s own ministry, often entails misunderstanding, opposition, and unjust accusations. Nevertheless, it remains always, and above all, a precious testimony that the true shepherd does not abandon the souls entrusted to his care, but, following the example of the Good Shepherd, lays down his life for the sheep (cf. John 10:11).

For us, however, the children of the ancient and glorious Archbishopric of Ohrid, this jubilee carries a particularly profound personal and historical significance.

With immeasurable gratitude and reverence, we recall the historic day of May 9, 2022 — and indeed, how could we, or how would we dare, ever forget it? — when at last, after long decades of painful ecclesiastical isolation and many years of struggle, through the paternal care and wisdom of His All-Holiness and by the decision of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, our ecclesiastical hierarchy, clergy, and faithful people were received into Eucharistic communion. It was a moment of ineffable joy, when the long-standing sorrow endured by generations of our forefathers was transformed into tears of thanksgiving, and our hearts once again experienced the fullness of Orthodox ecclesial communion.

And it is precisely here that the historic role of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in the life of our people is revealed with particular clarity. Today, when our Holy Church once again lives in canonical and Eucharistic unity with the fullness of Orthodoxy and when, with God’s help, we have numerous brothers, friends, and fellow concelebrants among the Local Orthodox Churches, we must never forget the one who first opened the door through which we entered this blessed communion. His name deserves to be inscribed in golden letters in the collective memory of our people. Without diminishing the significance of all subsequent fraternal gestures and ecclesiastical actions, historical truth obliges us to acknowledge that it was precisely Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, together with his Holy and Sacred Synod, who took the decisive first step and laid the foundation for the healing of our long-standing ecclesiastical wound. He did not remain indifferent to our pain; he did not disregard our appeal. He heard our cries and saw our spiritual suffering beneath the yoke of lovelessness. With a father’s heart and a profound awareness of his historical responsibility, he opened the way towards the full restoration of our Eucharistic communion with our Orthodox brethren.

Therefore, our gratitude towards him is not merely a matter of courtesy, nor an expression of a passing sentiment, but a duty of conscience and historical remembrance. As our esteemed Archbishop Stefan declared at that time in Constantinople: “May the ninth of May remain for us a day of spiritual and national remembrance, a day of benefaction, a day of honour and commemoration — a spiritual and national feast.” People who forget their benefactors easily lose the sense of the gift they have received, while even blessings may become burdens rather than sources of grace. And we, who for so long yearned for ecclesiastical unity, have less right than anyone else to forget the paternal hand extended towards us or to reject the embrace of a father. On the contrary, precisely now, as we taste the blessed fruits of reconciliation, we are called to bear still stronger witness to our gratitude towards the benefactor whose love and determination helped us attain this joy.

That historic act remains a luminous landmark in the modern history of our Church and our people. In it, we recognise the love of the Mother Church, which does not forget her children, but with a paternal embrace opened to them the door of Eucharistic unity. Truly, in this deed there seems to resound the voice of the Saviour Himself: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9).

And it is precisely for this reason — and we mention this as an expression of filial concern — that we experience with particular anguish of soul the unjust attacks, insults, and slanders that are not infrequently directed against the sacred person of the Ecumenical Patriarch. Certainly, within ecclesiastical life there may be differing opinions, positions, and judgements concerning particular matters. Yet sincere and responsible discernment is one thing, while malice, disparagement, and slander against one’s neighbour are something entirely different. Such conduct is unbecoming of anyone who calls himself an Orthodox Christian! It is all the more grievous when these attacks are directed against a man who has devoted his entire life to the service of the Church of God and who has shown such great love and kindness, especially towards us. The Holy Apostle James warns us not to speak evil of one another (cf. James 4:11). Slander is a grave sin; and when ingratitude towards one’s benefactor is added to it, it becomes an even more painful manifestation of spiritual insensitivity, and even of a loss of sound judgement and spiritual delusion. If slandering any neighbour is such a grave sin, how much more serious is the slander and reviling of the Primate — an act that constitutes nothing less than spiritual suicide! As Christians, it does not befit us to forget the good we have received and to respond with condemnation where we have been shown love. On the contrary, it is our duty to preserve the truth, to cultivate gratitude, and to pray for those who bear the heavy cross of ecclesiastical leadership. Moreover, it is both our honour and our dignity to follow, respect, and defend against those who would undermine the blessed ecclesiastical order and the hierarchical structure established within the Church!

Therefore, on this solemn and blessed anniversary, our hearts are filled not only with reverence for this great ecclesiastical jubilee, but also with the sincerest love and compassion for a spiritual Father whose name shall forever remain inscribed with gratitude in the history of our Church and in the prayerful remembrance of our Monastery.

Your Divine All-Holiness, beloved Father and Hierarch!

From the depths of our hearts, our beloved Elder, Bishop Parthenius of Antania, together with our entire monastic brotherhood and sisterhoods, extends to Your All-Holiness the most heartfelt congratulations on this radiant and blessed jubilee, with feelings of boundless gratitude for all Your benefactions, for Your evangelical love, and for everything You have done for our Holy Church and our people.

We beseech the Great High Priest and Shepherd of our souls, our Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercessions of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos, of the holy and glorious Apostle Andrew the First-Called, and of the zealous Apostle Bartholomew, to grant You steadfast health, spiritual strength, peace, heavenly consolation, and many more blessed years of fruitful patriarchal ministry.
