There are nights when time seems no longer to be measured by hours, but begins instead to be measured by prayer; nights when the earthly withdraws before the heavenly, and the human heart, freed at least for a moment from the noise of all that passes away, senses that it stands before another reality – higher, gentler, and more gracious.
Such was this blessed night of the Dormition at the ancient shrine of the Mother of God – the Monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos – Prečista, near Kičevo. Beneath her maternal protection, in the church sanctified by centuries of prayers, tears, and hopes, there could be felt that quiet and ineffable presence of the Queen Mother, Who even in her venerable Dormition does not abandon the world, but embraces it all the more strongly through her intercessions before the throne of her Son and God.
With the blessing of our beloved Elder and Abbot, His Grace Bishop Partenij of Antania, the entire monastic family of Bigorski, Rajčica, and Prečista gathered at the Monastery, together with multitudes of devout faithful from various regions, so that this seven-centuries-old holy place once again came alive in the fullness of its ancient prayerful dignity.
For nearly fourteen hours, from the early evening until midday, prayer rose unceasingly toward the Mother of God, the tireless Intercessor for the Christian people. Our beloved Elder tirelessly presided over the entire all-night Divine Service, prayerfully bearing the assembled people before the presence of the Most Pure One, and at its conclusion he served as principal celebrant of the Holy Divine Liturgy, concelebrating with the priestly brethren of Bigorski Monastery.
The Vigil gradually became a magnificent sacred celebration of love and thanksgiving. Following Festal Vespers and the long hours of prayer throughout the night, the Epitaphios of the Theotokos was brought forth during Matins. Before her holy image, the monks and faithful people sang with compunction the Lamentations of the Dormition, contemplating the mystery of that blessed sleep which for the Mother of God became a passage from earth to Heaven, from temporal life into eternal glory beside her Divine Son.
A particular majesty was added to the Divine Service by the presence of the world-renowned choir of Byzantine Orthodox ecclesiastical chant, Tropos, which for the first time filled the vaults of the church at Prečista with its profound, prayerful, and flawless psalmody.
Led by the distinguished choirmaster and professor of Byzantine ecclesiastical music, Mr. Konstantinos Angelidis, the Tropos Choir was not merely a musical adornment to the feast, but a true prayerful minister of its mystery. Through exceptional discipline, nobility of expression, and profound knowledge of the tradition of Byzantine psalmody, its members transformed the ancient ecclesiastical melodies into grace-filled prayer, leading the assembly toward that inward elevation and contemplation in which one no longer hears only the melody, but also the depth and mystical meaning that it carries.
Together with them, in beautiful prayerful harmony, sang the chanters of the Metropolitan Cosmas of Prečista Choir from Kičevo, as well as the Bigorski Choir, so that the two kliroi, united in the same spirit of prayer, offered a powerful and dignified doxology to the Most Holy Theotokos. Different voices became one prayer, and the church became one great heart beating to the rhythm of the centuries-old Orthodox Tradition.
After the conclusion of Matins, a solemn procession with the Epitaphios of the Theotokos was made around the church, accompanied by prayerful chanting and the Blessing of Waters, while the first rays of morning illuminated the monastery complex.
At that moment, after the long hours of Vigil, bodily weariness seemed to disappear before spiritual joy. It felt as though all nature surrounding the ancient shrine of Prečista had joined in the festal glorification of her whom the Church calls the Mother of Life.
The crown of the all-night Vigil was, of course, the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, at which His Grace Bishop Partenij presided.
Following the reading of the Holy Gospel, our beloved Elder addressed those present with an inspired and profound homily dedicated to our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and to the mystery of her venerable Dormition. His words once again directed the attention of the faithful toward that boundless love and humility with which the Theotokos surrendered herself to God, becoming through her obedience and purity the Mother of the Incarnate Son of God and, in Him, the spiritual Mother of the entire human race.
In the experience of the Church, the Dormition is not a sorrowful end, but a feast of the victory of life over death; the passage of the Most Pure One from the earthly to the heavenly and the assurance that man’s ultimate destiny is not the grave, but eternal communion with God.
After the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the Elder once again expressed his profound joy at this extraordinary prayerful gathering – a joy which, as he emphasized, belonged not only to him and to the monastic community, but also to the ancient shrine of Prečista itself.
This seven-century-old house of the Mother of God, which throughout the ages has received countless human prayers, sighs, thanksgivings, and tears, once again opened its embrace last night to such a great and blessed assembly and, like a mother, received and blessed all those who came in faith beneath her protection.
With particular gratitude the Elder addressed the members of the Tropos Choir, emphasizing the great sacrifice they had made in order to be present and, through their heavenly psalmody, to enrich the festal Vigil so powerfully.
His gratitude was directed especially to their choirmaster, Professor Konstantinos Angelidis, whose love for ecclesiastical music, high artistic responsibility, and fidelity to the Byzantine musical tradition could be felt in every verse that was chanted.
He also wholeheartedly thanked the chanters of the Metropolitan Cosmas of Prečista Choir, as well as all those whose labor and gifts contributed to the beauty of the Divine Service.
The Elder also addressed special words of gratitude and love to the devout Mr. Goran Mojsoski, a benefactor of the shrine of Prečista. Recalling the words of the Gospel that a good man “out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good,” the Bishop emphasized that true generosity is not measured by the amount of material wealth one possesses, but by the breadth of one’s heart.
Although he himself does not possess great material abundance, Mr. Mojsoski, with love and self-sacrifice, found the strength to undertake the cost of creating the magnificent new iconostasis of the church – a truly unique masterpiece, which from now on will remain as an enduring offering to the Mother of God and as a testimony to the faith and love of one man, but also of an entire generation, toward her holy dwelling.
Before the Elder’s final words of thanksgiving, the Superior of the Monastery, Nun Haritina, addressed him on behalf of the sisterhood with heartfelt words of gratitude:
“Your Grace, our beloved Elder,
Today, after the all-night Vigil, as Prečista Monastery is filled with prayer and grace, we wish to offer you an exceedingly humble yet symbolic gift – a small depiction of the reception of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Holy Mountain.
In it we symbolically behold the beginning of a spiritual miracle that God granted us: your arrival and settling at Bigorski Monastery in 1995. From that time onward, it was as though the presence of the Most Holy Theotokos began once again to be revealed upon our own little Holy Mountain – in the monasteries which, under your spiritual guidance, are coming back to life and being filled with prayer, sacrifice, and love.
We thank you for bringing to our people a light in which we can once again behold the goodness of God – a light that leads through the Cross to the Resurrection.
We say “once again,” because it required one pure and decisive “yes” for the light of Christ to break forth again in these lands after so long a time.
We thank you also for this holy feast, for this Vigil, and for the grace with which Prečista has been filled in abundance today.
We rejoice that through you the maternal help of the Most Holy Theotokos has come both to us and to our people. And from the depths of our hearts we pray that this help may remain with us, with our monasteries, and with our people – forever.
Many years, Elder! May the Most Holy Theotokos shelter you beneath her holy maternal omophorion and strengthen you in your sacred work.”
Then, as an expression of gratitude from the entire sisterhood, nun Haritina presented the Elder with a unique icon depicting the reception of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Holy Mountain of Athos.
At the conclusion, the Elder thanked all the faithful and pilgrims present who, through their perseverance, prayer, love, and patience, remained united with the Divine Service throughout the entire night. It was precisely their prayerful participation, together with the monastic assembly and the chanters, that transformed this Vigil into a truly conciliar celebration – into a night in which Heaven seemed unusually close to earth.
And when, after the thirteen-hour Vigil, the final liturgical petitions rose toward God and the midday light completely bathed ancient Prečista, one profound feeling remained in the hearts of all: that the Mother of God had once again gathered her children around herself.
For her Dormition is not separation. Her tomb is not a place of absence, but a testimony to life. And her love for the world does not cease with her translation to Heaven, but becomes even more expansive, even closer, and even more maternal.
For this reason, even on the night of her Dormition, the Church does not mourn without hope, but celebrates.
And for this reason ancient Prečista seemed this morning to resound with that same age-old cry of the Orthodox heart:
Most Holy Theotokos, save us!
